Foodbank

Established in 1992, Foodbank is the biggest hunger relief organisation in Australia. It is a non-denominational, not-for-profit organisation which provides the resources for charities and community groups to feed the hungry. Having originated in NSW, Foodbank now has a presence in all states and the Northern Territory and has distribution centres in all state capitals. With the problem of surplus in the Australian food industry rising, Foodbank acts as a conduit between food surplus and hunger by working with farmers, wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers who donate stock as part of a commitment to social responsibility. Over the course of a year, Foodbank provides 67 million meals to more than 1,750 schools and 2,400 charities.

Allergen Bureau

The Allergen Bureau is Australia and New Zealand’s leading industry body in the allergen management sector of the food industry. Through their mission of ‘providing consistent, science-based, allergen risk assessment and labelling’, they are driven to engage with the food industry and share information derived from global food regulations and scientific research. This ensures that consumers are constantly aware and understand information concerning food allergens. The Allergen Bureau’s current reach extends across Australia & New Zealand as well as Europe, America, Asia and Africa. Their interactions predominantly consist of industry professionals, research groups and consumers.

Food allergens are increasingly becoming an international phenomenon, with many more food-related bodies acknowledging the importance of addressing food allergies and how it affects people. The Allergen Bureau is a clear-cut example of how competitors in the food industry, food manufacturing and marketing companies, importers, exporters, retailers cooperate and interact to achieve a common goal for the interest of consumer welfare and health.

Institute of Food Technologists (IFT)

IFT is an international, not-for-profit organisation. Founded in 1939, it was created to execute the vision of a small group of scientists who believed that communication amongst professionals in the food science and technology industry was paramount to the progress of emerging disciplines. Over seventy-five years later, IFT has grown in both numbers and impact with members from more than 95 countries around the world. IFT’s mission is to advance the science of food and its application across the global food system through facilitating the interchange of ideas among its members, stimulating scientific investigations into technical problems dealing with the manufacture and distribution of food, promulgating the results of research in food technology, offering a forum for discussion, and planning, organising and administering projects for the advancement of food science.
