AIFST Award for Excellence in Food Science and 
Technology Education 2026

The Award for Excellence in Food Science and Technology Education was established by AIFST to
recognise outstanding achievement and contributions by university and vocational educators to
teaching and learning in food science and technology. It aims to highlight and celebrate innovative
practices that enhance student learning, foster workplace readiness, and inspire the next generation of
professionals in the Australian food sector.

This Award is justified as a strategic initiative to advance high-quality, industry-relevant education,
ensuring graduates are well-prepared to contribute to a dynamic and complex global food system

The 2026 joint award winners are Snehal Rajendra Jadhav, Deakin University and Professor Heather Smyth, University of Queensland.

Dr Snehal Jadhav from Deakin University, has transformed food science education by creating authentic, industry-connected learning experiences that prepare students for successful careers in the agrifood sector. Through innovative curriculum design, the integration of nationally recognised HACCP training, extensive industry engagement and a strong commitment to mentoring, Dr Jadhav has empowered students to develop the practical skills, confidence and professional networks needed to thrive in the workforce. Her leadership extends beyond the classroom through collaboration with AIFST, industry and the broader education community, making a lasting contribution to food science education in Australia. 

Professor Heather Smyth from The University of Queensland, is an internationally recognised expert in flavour chemistry and sensory science whose influence extends across education, research and industry. Through innovative, research-led teaching, experiential learning, outstanding student mentorship and strong industry engagement, Professor Smyth has equipped students with the skills and confidence to excel in food science careers. Her leadership in sensory science, public engagement and collaboration across academia and industry has made a lasting contribution to food science education in Australia and beyond.
