Food regulators nationally are in the process of engaging with the food service and closely related retail sectors, such as restaurants, takeaways, bakeries and commercial caterers, to improve food safety management outcomes nationally.

Regulators are engaging with this sector, as foodborne illness outbreaks in this sector account for just under two-thirds of all reported foodborne illness outbreaks in Australia, despite having legislation, standards, quality assurance programs and other systems in place.

To ensure consistency, all States and Territories are delivering a consistent presentation.  The aim of the consultation is to seek feedback from industry regarding current regulatory and non-regulatory measures in place, food businesses understanding of food safety culture and additional measures that could potentially give the greatest improvement in food safety outcomes.
