Dr Maria Stewart is a Business Scientist and Clinical Research Lead in the Global Nutrition R&D Group at Ingredion Incorporated.  Maria oversees the clinical research program, especially fiber regulatory substantiations and leads scientific research into energy metabolism and healthy blood glucose and digestive health. 

Maria has published 22 papers on digestion and fermentation of ingredients such as resistant starch, fructooligosaccharides, gums and polydextrose. She co-authored the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ position paper on the health benefits of dietary fiber and has worked with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Nutrition Evidence Library in support of initiatives such as the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Maria has an M.S and Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of Minnesota. 
 
Her research areas include dietary fiber (fiber content of foods and physiological effects in humans), impact of bioactive dietary components on chronic disease risk, functional food development and marketing, prebiotics, probiotics, microbial metabolism, gut health, in vitro digestion and fermentation (model human digestive system). 
Maria will be visiting Australia in May, covering the latest in health and nutrition trends from the US and recent Health Claims.
