Engineering For Food

Overview

This conference will examine sustainable engineering practises which are, and could be, employed to ensure the future viability of the food processing industry in Australia. Case studies will highlight how engineering has improved food processing..

Introduction

The food manufacturing industry is Australia’s largest manufacturing sector and engineers play a vital role in converting agricultural raw materials into marketable foods to satisfy the demanding requirements of consumers.  This covers all aspects such as safety, sensory properties, nutritional quality and affordability of processed foods.  At a time when the global economic conditions are tough and industry has to cope with finite resources, engineers face enormous challenges in designing, constructing, operating, modern food factories and distribution systems to ensure that both the consumer requirements and business goals are met in a sustainable and affordable manner.

This workshop brings together chemical, food, electrical, mechanical and civil engineers with scientists from academia, research and industry to share their experiences and visions for the Australian food industry. The program will have a combination of presentations, case studies, research discussion.

Engineers, scientists and students with an interest in food processing will find this a valuable conference and an excellent networking opportunity.

The speakers include:

  • representatives from industry – small, medium and large food companies
  • researchers in food advances
  • Australian and international experts.

Presentations include:

  • The impact of processing on food safety
  • Enhancing nutrition through food microstructure – the role of food process engineering
  • The role of engineers in sustainable food manufacture – a case study from the UK
  • Food process engineering in fast moving consumer goods – a case study from Mars Australia
  • Process engineering R&D – sustainable development of future food processing – a case study
  • Building an energy efficient culture – “Sharing Energy Consumption Information: Measure and Manage"
