This Award recognises a significant new development in a process, product, ingredient, equipment or packaging, which has achieved successful commercial application in any section of the Australian food industry within the last six months to five years.

Food Industry Innovation Award - Full Conditions

Purpose

(a)     Acknowledgement of a significant new development in a process, product, ingredient, equipment or packaging, which has achieved successful application in any section of the Australian food industry.

Award

(b)     The Award recipient shall receive a mounted plaque of the Institute logo encircled by the title FOOD INDUSTRY INNOVATION AWARD and suitably inscribed with the name of the Company or Organisation and the year of the Award.  If more than one Company or Organisation has contributed to an innovation, an appropriate recognition will be determined by Council.

(c)     A representative of the Company or Organisation that is the winner of the Award shall deliver an Award address at such time as is decided by Council.  The subject of the address shall relate to the nature of the innovation for which the Award is made, and the duration of the address shall be no more than thirty (30) minutes.

(d)     The Award recipient shall also be entitled to utilise the Institute logo and title (as shown on the plaque), in advertising, trade show graphics, product literature and online ONLY in association with the product or process for which the Award is allocated.  The logo and title may be placed on any product packaging, or on any product/equipment for which the Award was made.  The Institute logo shall be utilised for a maximum of five (5) years, and the year of award receipt shall be printed in association with the logo.

(e)     Council may, at its discretion, present suitably inscribed Certificates to individuals identified as being major contributors to the innovation.

(f)  Finalists shall receive a certificate, which includes the Institute logo surrounded by the title FOOD INDUSTRY INNOVATION AWARD and the word FINALIST under the logo and title.  The certificate shall specify the title/description of the product or progress for which the Award nomination was made.  Finalists shall not have permission to utilise the Institute logo and title (as shown on the certificate) in association with the product/equipment for which the nomination was made.

Eligibility

(g)     Any company or organisation responsible for innovation in any of the following areas, that has achieved successful commercial application in the Australian food industry in six (6) months to five (5) years prior to the date of presentation, is eligible for the Award:

(i)  Process

(ii) Product

(iii)  Ingredient

(iv)   Equipment

(v) Packaging

(vi)   Food Safety

(vii)  Logistics

(h)     Nomination is not restricted to Australian-owned companies.  Additional points will be allocated if a significant proportion of the innovation was carried out in Australia.

(i)  Nominations for the Award shall only be made by a member of the Institute.  If this person is not employed by the nominated company or organisation, at least one staff member from that company or organisation shall also be a member of the Institute.

Submissions

(j)  Council shall call for nominations no later than six (6) months prior to the presentation (to be held at the AIFST Inc Annual Convention).

(k)     Submissions shall include the following:

(i)  Completion of electronic nomination questionnaire (Appendix 7.10.1)

(ii) A minimum of 2 colour photographs that refer to the innovation described (optional)

(iii)  Photographs must be provided in .jpg or .gif format at 300dpi resolution or equivalent.

(l)  Submissions shall be submitted via post to the attention of the President, AIFST Inc National Office.

(m)   Deadline for submissions will be three (3) months after the initial announcement.

Judging Process

(n)     At the close of nominations the President, or delegate of the AIFST Inc., shall nominate an award jury of at least three (3) members.

Judges shall:

(i)  Be Professional Members of the Institute

(ii) Have a minimum 10 years experience in the food industry

(iii)  Not be members of the Executive Committee

(iv)  Not be an employee or close personal or professional associate of the nominee(s)

(o)     The President, or delegate, shall act as Convener of the Award Jury.  The Convener shall have no primary voting rights except in the event of an equality of points, in which case the Convener shall exercise a casting vote.

(p)   Should a member of the Award Jury withdraw at any stage, the President, or Convener, shall appoint a substitute juror.

Submission criteria

(q)     The Convener will provide each juror with an assessment form (Appendix 7.10.2).  Each juror shall allocate points for each of the submission criteria as per the assessment form.

(i)  Technical merit

(ii) Economic significance

(iii)  Successful application

(iv)Overall significance in the food industry

(v) Company (and personnel) commitment to the project, and

(vi)  Enhancement of food standards.

(r) Jurors shall return the completed Assessment Form to the Convener via e-mail (provided by Convener) or post to AIFST Inc. National Office.

Determination of Award Recipient

(s)     The Convener shall receive and record the points allotted by each juror to each nominee, and the nominee obtaining the greatest number of points shall be the recipient of the Award, provided that no Award shall be made if none of the nominees receive at least 70 marks.

(t) Not later than five weeks after posting the nominations and supporting documents to jurors, the Convener, if any, shall convey the results to the President, who shall arrange that the recipient of the Award is informed forthwith.

(u)     A representative of the Company or Organisation that is the winner of the Award shall deliver an Award address as stipulated in Clause 6.3 (c) at such time as is decided by Council.

(v) Any Nominee who was allotted half or more of the number of points received by the winner, at the discretion of the jury, may be invited to resubmit their nomination in the following year of the Award, provided all other clauses of the Rule are met.  The nominee may resubmit the unsuccessful innovation in its original or modified form if so desired.
